From Fear to Faith...

This week I was having a conversation with a lady I met after a presentation that I had just given. During the presentation, I talked about the fact that living our lives on purpose requires a commitment to moving out of fear and walking by faith. Stirred by what she heard, this lady wanted to share with me an adventure she had undertaken in order to shift her life from the grips of fear to experiencing the power of living each day by faith.

She began by telling me she decided to take a cruise. At one of the stops along her voyage, she was given an opportunity to take a tour into a tropical rain forest. Although she was extremely apprehensive because of the unknown, she decided to take the tour anyway. When her group arrived at the destination to begin the tour, she was riddled with fear. All she could see was a monstrosity of trees, vines, and every other piece of greenery imaginable. She wondered how they would ever find their way; how they would ever get through to the other side. Nevertheless, she wanted to stay committed to the choice she had made before leaving the comforts of her luxurious cruise ship.

The journey began. They entered in under what seemed to be a leafy canopy hanging over their heads. It was extremely difficult to see ahead or what turn or direction they were going to take next. This was nerve-wracking for her because everything in her wanted to see, wanted the plan, and wanted to know what was to come. But, she couldn’t. This wasn’t her tour and she wasn’t the one in control…And in actuality, her not being in total control was what frightened her the most.

But right in the midst of her anxiety and her dread for even consenting to this excursion in the first place, she recognized something. She recognized that she didn’t have to know the direction. She didn’t have to know the next turn. She didn’t have to know where and when the tour was going lead and end. Why? Because she realized they were in the hands of a very capable tour guide. And for this reason, she didn’t have to have all the answers. Her only responsibility was to trust the tour guide and enjoy the trip.

As we consider our own lives, there are times when we don’t remember that we have a Tour Guide. So we become afraid of the unknown, not sure of the direction we are going in, uncertain of what turn to take next. But, the beauty in our walk with God is that we don’t have to know. We don’t have to have it all figured out. Faith only requires that we follow The One who is leading us wherever He leads. And, when we can Fully Allow It To Happen, we will never have to hear our TOUR GUIDE ask, “Why are ye so fearful? How is it that ye have no faith?” (Mark 4:40)

What Can I Give To Haiti?

I was moved to tears this morning as I watched the reports of the tremendous devastation and tragedy in Haiti. As the cameras panned across waves of people and property, my heart swelled with empathy. I saw the anguished faces of fathers, mothers, and children as they lay in the midst of utter ruin. I saw the injured, I saw the distressed, and I saw those who were broken.

I thought about what it must be like to have your entire world shaken in a matter of moments; and when the dust settles you are left only with the grief associated with the horrifying losses. I felt a sudden sense of helplessness. I asked myself, “What can I do?” “How can I help?” “How can I make a difference?”

Then I watched as phone numbers and addresses flashed across the screen for the American Red Cross. I felt a sigh of relief at the thought that I could send a donation. A donation…but, “How far would my donation go?” “How much of a difference would my donation make?” The sinking feeling returned.

Brooding through my morning routine and commute, I arrived at my office. I sat at my desk for a moment of still quietness before beginning my tasks. And in my stillness, I heard in my spirit, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face…”2 Chronicles 7:14a

That was it! That’s what I could give! I could pray! Now, I know this sounds simple and seems as if prayer would have been a natural response of a Christian to begin with – And it was. In fact, when I first heard the news of what had transpired in Haiti, my very first words came out in the form of a prayer, “O God!”.

However, I recognized that what I could give was much deeper, much more meaningful than an “O God!”. I could make a commitment to fervent prayer. I could give my time and energy in prayer. I could take my same empathetic sighs and tears and direct them to entreat God.
So, I will make a donation to the Red Cross…But, I will be giving of myself in prayer for Haiti committing because of THE CROSS. Will you join me?

Be Inspired,
