What Coaching Is…

Life Coaching is a new and rapidly growing profession that is profoundly different from consulting, mentoring, therapy, or counseling. The coaching process addresses specific personal projects, business successes, general conditions, and transitions in the client's personal life, relationships, or profession by examining what is going on right now, discovering what the obstacles or challenges might be, and choosing a course of action to make your life be what you want it to be. Coaching entails working with people who already have a measure of “success” in their lives, but who want to bridge the gap between where they are and where they want to be in their profession and their personal life. This is much like a trainer who helps an athlete win the “gold medal” – not just be in the race. Coaches help their clients design the life they want and bring out their clients’ own gifts and resources so that they can achieve excellence and create purposeful, extraordinary lives.
 

What Coaching Is Not…

Coaching is not therapy. Individuals seeking coaches aren’t looking for help with deep-seated emotional difficulties, but rather are searching for more practical problem-solving strategies to sidestepping, smoothing, or leaping over bumps in the road. They want someone who will lead them to practical, actionable strategies that will help them solve a problem right now. Therefore, Coaching is likely to be helpful for people who are in ruts, overwhelmed or stymied by change, or too stressed to step back and analyze the thorns and obstacles that hinder or bind them. Coaching might be just the ticket for someone whose life’s path has caused them to lack direction or a sense of purpose.
